Our Musical Director -
Mr Huw Thomas
Huw was born in Llanelli, South Wales and studied Music in Bath, Bristol and London. His first teaching post was at the Tiffin Boys School, Kingston Upon Thames, later moving to Chichester further to his appointment as Director of Music at Bishop Luffa School. After over thirty years teaching children in schools, working with choirs, instrumental groups and other musical genres, he became our Musical Director. His other musical interests include composing and arranging for our choir and others.
Harry Woodroof Chairman
I sing with the first tenor section which are the highest voices.
I am currently Chairman of The Solent Male Voice Choir
I was asked (told?!) to join my school Choral Society when I was 12 by the Head of Music (Mr Llewellyn). Luckily, it was my way into singing.
My favourite song from our current repertoire, it’s got to be Morte Criste. Powerful stuff! With a great moment for the first tenors, followed by an ‘eyeballs out’ ending for everyone. However, from our wonderful Library…. well, there’s so much to choose from. But the ‘Libera Me’ from Faure’s Requiem wins for its pure, simple, beauty. But (hint to Huw!) I don’t think we’ve sung it in 2025.
I first heard of our choir, where else but our great website? A search for ‘Male Voice Choir near me’ hit the bullseye.
As for memorable concerts there are two -
The first……the pre-concert trepidation. It never quite goes away, but it helps keep one sharp. Also, the last …. there’s always a moment in every concert that helps answer the immortal question (about life) “What’s it all about?”
The most unexpected or delightful thing I’ve discovered since joining is that it is possible to knock out a good lunch for 15 choir members & partners cooking everything in an old wheel-barrow with a single sack of charcoal. No need for those fancy gas thingies! Come to next year’s Choir Summer Barbeque to see it happen again!
The choir now is a pretty major part of my life. But that comes with the job - and privilege - of being Chairman. As I see it, my role is to ensure the Choir not only exists, but is thriving in 5, even 10 years, time. Sadly, many choirs won’t be: they’re closing faster than country pubs. I’m determined SMVC won’t be one of them. Choirs like ours really help prevent and repair the ‘social fraying’ that is happening to UK society
Leading a voluntary organization gives me many opportunities to learn new skills. And that, I’m sure, is one of the keys to a good retirement. So even being Chairman contributes directly to my well-being. And the rehearsals and concerts definitely do.
If I was to invite someone to join the choir, I would simply say to them?
It’s fun! Just do it!
